Infant Exam/Toddler Time
After your child’s first tooth erupts, you should start their semiannual dental checkups. These appointments allow us to recommend individualized dental care routines based on your current child’s oral health condition and risk factors. With these little ones, we will also show you the most effective way to brush despite their wiggliness.
These appointments also allow time to discuss other concerns such as timing of teeth eruption, oral habits (thumb sucking and pacifier), future dental trauma, etc.
Dental Checkups & Teeth Cleanings
With routine visits with us, our objective is to keep your child’s smile free of cavities and catch any other oral health issues early on before they progress. We also monitor your child’s growth and development at these biannual checkups, so that if needed, we can refer to an orthodontist at the right time.
Other than daily oral care, regular dental checkups and cleanings are the most important thing you can do for their oral health.
Learning how to properly care for teeth can take many, many years of practice, and even then, the back molars and premolars can be difficult to clean with their anatomically deep grooves. To protect these cavity-prone teeth, we offer BPA-free dental sealants, or a clear plastic coating. A dental sealant is a protective barrier between the enamel and harmful bacteria, food particles, and acids. It only takes a few minutes to apply, but its effects can last for up to 10 years!
Have you ever wondered why fluoride is sometimes added to public water or in dental products? This mineral provides reinforcement for tooth enamel, making it more resistant to decay. In addition to these common sources of fluoride, we can give your child a concentrated topical fluoride treatment after we clean their teeth. As a result, they can more easily stay cavity free until their next dental appointment in six months.
If your child is active in any sports that could involve an impact to the mouth, they need to wear a mouthguard. Although you find generic mouthguards at any sporting goods store, these commercial appliances tend to be uncomfortable and slip around too easily. In many cases, this could mean that kids neglect to wear them altogether. We can provide a mouthguard that is specifically designed to fit your child’s mouth perfectly, ensuring protection for their smile on the field or court.
Frenectomies/Lip & Tongue Tie
Does your baby have trouble breastfeeding or forming certain sounds? Does their tongue have a limited range of motion? A tongue tie may be to blame. Some babies have an overly restrictive frenulum, or the soft tissue that connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth and the lips to the jaws, making feedings and speech development much more difficult. We can perform a gentle frenectomy, during which we release the excess tissue and give your child better range of motion.
Silver Diamine Fluoride
Did you know that the very beginning stages of a cavity can be stalled by the use of a liquid? Using a conservative treatment option called Silver Diamine Fluoride early on, we can stop decay in its tracks before it has a chance to cause worse damage. This conservative method can be used to postpone treatment or avoid treatment altogether.
